Song of the Day, Vol. 2

it took a break for a time because i was really busy, but then it came back:
-----------------------------------------------------------

yes, it's officially back!

here's a little recap of the description:

So basically, I don't know if anyone ever noticed, but I used to post the name of a song each day on my profile. My hope was that I could share some of my favorite music with anyone who was interested in being exposed to new, probably VERY different stuff— seeing as my taste is, well, unique.

Today I was thinking, and came to the conclusion that I should make a mini-blog or something with my "song of the day"s. So yeah, that's what I'm gonna do. I'll post a new one whenever I remember.

I don't know if anyone's actually gonna read this, but if you do, that's hella rad, and I hope you like my song choices.

peace and love.

emi

and here we go again. vol. 1 is still there if you're interested. just check my notes.

----------------------------------
Saturday, January 31, 2009
"Sleepyhead," Passion Pit

an excellent little experimental electropop piece, complete with intense falsetto and very spastic, kind of jarring instrumentals.
--------------------------------------------
Sunday, February 1, 2009
"Shared Islands," High Places

some refer to this as "folktronica" if that helps you get a sense of what it is...
as you may have already noticed, i'm really, really into experimental stuff right now. and this definitely fits that category.
---------------------------------------------
Monday, February 2, 2009
"Don't Care," Threatmantics

a fun, pop rock-y track by a fun pop rock-y welsh trio. their accents are reallyy intense, but definitely very interesting to listen to...
---------------------------------------------
Tuesday, February 3, 2009
"I Can't Take It," Tegan and Sara

yeah, it's been a really shitty week... and it's only tuesday. woo!

oh, also, you know, this is a good song. but i'm assuming you already figured that out since it IS my song of the day and all...
---------------------------------------------
Wednesday, February 4, 2009
"Come Saturday," The Pains of Being Pure At Heart

low in terms of fidelity, up in terms of beat // noise in terms of pop, soft in terms of vocals.
----------------------------------------------
Thursday, February 5, 2009
"Chicago," The Uglysuit

it's not the uniqueness of this song that is nice, but rather the sort of familiarity of it. it's really not all that special or different and i think that's why i like it so much.
----------------------------------------------
Friday, February 6, 2009
"Knotty Pine," Dirty Projectors + David Byrne

i kind of am in love with the vocals in this song. they're a little bit annoying almost, but in a good way. that probably doesn't make any sense at all, but that's still kind of my feeling about it.
----------------------------------------------
Saturday, February 7, 2009
"All Tomorrow's Parties," The Velvet Underground

this choice was inspired by Twelfth Night . wonderful song. it's just so sixties. sometimes i wish i lived then.
-----------------------------------------------
Sunday, February 8, 2009
"A Thing For Me," Metronomy

this song wouldn't be nearly as good without the video. that's what really makes it:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uYB2Mqs24ss
-----------------------------------------------
Monday, February 9, 2009
"Dead Birds," The Bent Pen Project

yet another wonderful swedish musician.
-----------------------------------------------
Tuesday, February 10, 2009
"I Am Warm & Powerful," Someone Still Love You Boris Yeltsin

good title for a rainy day.
-----------------------------------------------
Wednesday, February 11, 2009
"88," The Cool Kids

not gonna lie, i'm a wannabe rapper... kyle and i WILL succeed in this quest. we will.
also the mention of all those eighties dance moves in this song just makes me so happy.
-----------------------------------------------
Thursday, February 12, 2009
"Fear," Benjy Ferree

a great folk-y pop-y rock-y (yes, all three) song.
-----------------------------------------------
Friday, February 13, 2009
"Kookaburra," John Vanderslice

super easy and nice to listen to. i really like this whole album ("Emerald City").
-----------------------------------------------
Saturday, February 14, 2009
"Your Love (Live)," Bon Iver

so i wasn't going to choose a love-themed song for today... but i couldn't help myself.
i am in love with the live recording version of this song. justin vernon is incredible.
-----------------------------------------------
Sunday, February 15, 2009
"So Bored," Wavves

probably the most lo-fi music i have ever heard. ever.
but in a good way, in my opinion.
[note: if you're not a fan of loud, scratchy noise, well, you may not want to listen to this]

Song of the Day, Vol. 1

Here's the first installment:
----------------------------------
So basically, I don't know if anyone ever noticed, but I used to post the name of a song each day on my profile. My hope was that I could share some of my favorite music with anyone who was interested in being exposed to new, probably VERY different stuff— seeing as my taste is, well, unique.

[and now it is actually a real blog, rather than a facebook note]

[[also, i apologize for the really bad, uninformative descriptions of essentially all of the songs up until december 18ths', when someone finally called me on it, so i became less lazy and actually wrote out something interesting for each song]]

Song of the Day:
"Nick & Norah's Theme," Mark Mothersbaugh

not only adorable, but just really nice overall.
------------------------------------
Thursday, November 20, 2008
"Blood On Our Hands (Justice Remix)," Death From Above 1979

some of dfa's best for sure.
------------------------------------
Friday, November 21, 2008
"Nonpareil of Favor," Of Montreal

i really should have been there last night... : (
------------------------------------
Saturday, November 22, 2008
"Kids (Soulwax Remix)," MGMT

so. fucking. awesome. check it.
------------------------------------
Sunday, November 23, 2008
"Foxes Mate For Life," Born Ruffians

definitely one of my all-time favorite songs. look up the lyrics if you get a chance. so accurate and meaningful. especially the first verse...
------------------------------------
Monday, November 24, 2008
"Lover," Devendra Banhart

such an excellent song. perfect for happy, dance-y days when life is just super super great.
ps happy birthday sarah! love!
-------------------------------------
Tuesday, November 25, 2008
"Do You Love Me Still?" The Kooks

this song is indescribable in terms of words. it's that good.
-------------------------------------
Wednesday, November 26, 2008
"Metanoia," MGMT

14 minutes of bliss.
like actually though. this song reminds me a lot of the book 'steppenwolf' by herman hesse (same author as 'siddhartha'--so that kind of book...) which is essentially the meaning of life condensed into about 218 pages or so.
the lyrics to this little medley do pretty much the same thing.
--------------------------------------
Thursday, November 27, 2008
"The Plot," White Rabbits

very good song. Happy Thanksgiving!!
--------------------------------------
Friday, November 28, 2008
"Une Année Sans Lumiere," Arcade Fire

I feel like this song is one of the more underappreciated ones of the album ('Funeral').
the whole album is really just beautiful. listen to it in its entirety-- no breaks. best way to fully experience its majestic-ness.
--------------------------------------
Saturday, November 29, 2008
"In The Aeroplane Over The Sea," Neutral Milk Hotel

"...how strange it is to be anything at all..."
but oh, how wonderful it is too : )
---------------------------------------
Sunday, November 30, 2008
"Peacebone," Animal Collective

this is simply a really great song.
---------------------------------------
Monday, December 1, 2008
"Weird Fishes/Arpeggi," Radiohead

really beautiful
lovely lyrics
(if you haven't already noticed, i'm a sucker for that. a song with vocals is very rarely considered seriously good in my book if it does not have amazing lyrics slash lyrics that really speak to me).
---------------------------------------
Tuesday, December 2, 2008
"Vagabond," Greenskeepers

a little rock-y, but still quite excellent.
---------------------------------------
Wednesday, December 3, 2008
"Juno," Tokyo Police Club

this song wind the title today. it's definitely a good one.
(ps these guys were awesome live. the keyboardist went so insane when i saw them that the keyboard fell off the stand... pretty great stuff... see them if you ever get a chance).
---------------------------------------
Thursday, December 4, 2008
"In The New Year," The Walkmen

so fucking great.
---------------------------------------
Friday, December 5, 2008
"You! Me! Dancing!" Los Campesinos!

equally amazing.
---------------------------------------
Saturday, December 6, 2008
"Evident Utensil (MGMT Remix)," Chairlift

i'm such a fan of these guys... i think they have a show coming up at mezzanine with cold war kids and vampire weekend, if anyone's interested.
---------------------------------------
Sunday, December 7, 2008
"Up On Your Leopard, Upon The End Of Your Feral Days," Sunset Rubdown

i really love sunset rubdown.
---------------------------------------
Monday, December 8, 2008
"Prehistoric," Circulatory System

some of the guys from The Olivia Tremor control + some extras = excellence.
---------------------------------------
Tuesday, December 9, 2008
"How Well Can You Swim?" Panther

not feeling like i can very well, at the moment...

(in case that confused you, think of it metaphorically)
---------------------------------------
Wednesday, December 10, 2008
"Think I Wanna Die," Someone Still Loves You Boris Yelstin

this song is essentially discussing the contemplation of suicide, but in a really sweet, i really like listening to this kind of way.
----------------------------------------
Thursday, December 11, 2008
"Neonland," Detektivbyrån

as with the majority of detektivbyrån's songs, very reminiscent of a music box.
----------------------------------------
Friday, December 12, 2008
"We Care," MGMT

i really wish 'climbing to new lows' and the 'we (don't) care ep" were more accessible because they are really great.
----------------------------------------
Saturday, December 13, 2008
"The Cool Kids vs Le Loup - We Are Mikey! We Are Rock!" The Hood Internet

not as cool as girl talk but still pretty sick. plus "mikey rocks" by the cool kids is such an awesome song slash i love the cool kids and they are so hilarious in concert
----------------------------------------
Sunday, December 14, 2008
"Untitled" Neutral Milk Hotel

ksndflknWELKMaklwmcfqzanckwnekjcnksnacjknrekan. ansdehjkawjr. ksndfjknw ajkwnerwuqo nvbejkrnrv. cdksoaeilwajn skfnke skfnke.
----------------------------------------
Monday, December 15, 2008
"It Ends With A Fall," Okkervil River

love.
----------------------------------------
Tuesday, December 16, 2008
"It Started With A Mixx," Los Campesinos!

okay, so i've liked lyrics before (like all the time)-- this is not new. but i don't think any have ever actually described my life so exactly as these. literally. i think they may have been written about me... it's actually quite scary.
anyway, i am therefore utterly in love with this song. it's also just really good musically, etc. duh, it's los campesinos!...
-----------------------------------------
Wednesday, December 17, 2008
"Starry Stairs," Okkervil River

I was really lucky to get the chance to see Will Sheff speak and perform this night. he is truly intelligent and i think his analysis of the music industry and the real significance of art are really worth taking a look at, even if you disagree with him.
here's a link to some of his writing ( a bunch of really thoughtful and interesting reviews, etc.): http://www.jound.com/will/articles.html
definitely check it out if you get a chance.
-----------------------------------------
Thursday, December 18, 2008
"English House," Fleet Foxes

a large majority of this song is solely instrumental (the last 2 minutes or so plus some earlier parts), but it really stands on its own even without lyrics. as i was telling mickey earlier, i really appreciate the obvious emotion in the fleet foxes' music. the singer really puts all of his effort into each note he sings, as do each of the instrumentalists. the result is really powerful and wonderful to listen to.
-----------------------------------------
Friday, December 19, 2008
"The Fool," Neutral Milk Hotel

not really one of the more listened to songs on "in the aeroplane over the sea" but definitely one to check out. the horns are extremely melancholic, but at the same time they have a certain elegance and are very aesthetically pleasing

i just realized i kind of have a lot of NMH songs already on this...
so i thought today i would have two songs
the second one is:

"Blind," Hercules and Love Affair

i can't decide if Antony Hegarty's voice is unique and great or just obnoxious, but nonetheless Hercules and Love Affair is always a fun, pop-y listen
-----------------------------------------
Saturday, December 20, 2008
"Your Ex-Lover Is Dead," Stars

"when there's nothing left to burn, you have to set yourself on fire"
intense opening.
the rest of the song is not nearly as scary and suicidal sounding. think: happy piano, alternating boy and girl vocals, almost a bit sufjan-esque...
-----------------------------------------
Sunday, December 21, 2008
"Letters From The Ambulance," The Fashion

the fashion is a pretty obscure danish alternative-rock band. although not very well-known (not really even in the, quote, indie music scene, end quote) these guys have produced some great music that i think plays into a lot of different musical tastes. their self-titled sophmore release (the one with knives as cover art)-- referred to as a "hybrid of new wave, hip hop & dancehall, and alternative rock influences," among various other things-- is really quite excellent and definitely worth a listen
-----------------------------------------
Monday, December 22, 2008
"Lover's Day," TV On The Radio

the layered vocals in this song are really nice. the entirety of "dear science" is really nice, actually. it's been named spin magazine's top album of the year, which, while not necessarily entirely accurate, is well-deserved and definitely tells you something

okay, so today is another two song day, cause i just came across this song in my iTunes library that i had no idea i even had.

"Big Bangs, Black Holes, Meteorites," Love Is All

when it first started playing, i thought it was some los campesinos! song. but then i didnt recognize it, so i looked at the title/artist and it was this. love is all is apparently this swedish indie pop band (yes, yet another one). i enjoyed what i listened to quite a bit, so hopefully you will too
------------------------------------------
Tuesday, December 23, 2008
"Drop-Out," Times New Viking

super lo-fi "noise pop"
------------------------------------------
Wednesday, December 24, 2008
"Two Weeks," Grizzly Bear

the piano is kind of, i don't know, peppy-sounding, but in a good way. the vocals are really nice too. sorry, i'm not really feeling inspired to write a really good review right now (that apology was mainly for you, mickey, if you read this). so i'm just gonna say that i like this song a lot, and you can check it out yourself and decide if you like it too. as is the case with all of the above songs and all of the songs to come below. alrighty. that is all. merry christmas eve, or happy hanukkah, or happy kwanza, or happy holidays in general, etc.
-------------------------------------------
Thursday, December 25, 2008
"Scenic World," Beirut

such a happy song. just a fun little tidbit: every time i hear this song the office theme song comes to mind. now, i've only actually seen the office once or twice, and most people claim to hear no similarities between the two whatsoever, but they definitely are really similar! at least i think so...
anyway, yeah. merry christmas!
------------------------------------------
Friday, December 26, 2008
"First Day of My Life," Bright Eyes

acousticy. typical bright eyes.
(see below)
-------------------------------------------
Saturday, December 27, 2008
"Take It Easy (Love Nothing)," Bright Eyes

yes, two bright eyes songs in a row. but these are so different they could be by two entirely different artists. this one's off of "digital ash in a digital urn" which overall is quite different from a lot of conor oberst's other work as bright eyes. more electric and heavier sounding, you could say. kind of. i dont really know. its really good though.
--------------------------------------------
Sunday, December 28, 2008
"Maybe You Can Owe Me," Architecture In Helsinki

while the end does kind of drag on for a bit, this is a truly beautiful song.
--------------------------------------------
Monday, December 29, 2008
"Angeles," Elliott Smith

i wish elliott smith was still around. rip.
--------------------------------------------
Tuesday, December 30, 2008
"Weekend Wars," MGMT

"i'm a curse and i'm a sound, when i open up my mouth, there's a reason i don't win, i don't know how to begin"
well put.
--------------------------------------------
Wednesday, December 31, 2008
"We Are Your Friends," Justice vs. Simian

no explanation necessary. have an excellent new years everyone.
--------------------------------------------
Thursday, January 1, 2009
"First Love," Uffie

less "rap"-type singing than usual for uffie. very electronic-y sounding singing instead.
--------------------------------------------
Friday, January 2, 2009
"Nantes," Beirut

i spent over 5 hours on a bus an then about 2 hours on a train today to get home from tahoe so i'm not about to write a review. i'll just say that this might be one of my all-time favorite songs.
---------------------------------------------
Saturday, January 3, 2009
"Today," Jefferson Airplane

this song just happened to come up on my little iLike application on my profile so i listened to it and was reminded how much i like jefferson airplane. then i rediscovered one of their albums, "surrealistic pillow," from the late 60's. really excellent "psychedelic rock."
----------------------------------------------
Sunday, January 4, 2009
"Magic Spells," Crystal Castles

there is a lot of controversy surrounding this band in regards to illegal use of samples, etc.
but... one of my idols is gregg gillis... soooo, that's not really a problem in my book.
----------------------------------------------
Monday, January 5, 2009
"Telepathic Memory Toast Siren," Stars Like Fleas

really experimental. and by that i mean, "WHOA. i can't even tell if i like this it's so weird." but at the same time there's something about it that really draws you in... not to mention the song title and band name, which together with the unexplainable irresistibility of the sound of the song make this something that definitely falls under the category of "not to miss."
-----------------------------------------------
Tuesday, January 6, 2009
"Reckoner," Radiohead

if you have a record player, i really recommend getting 'in rainbows' on a record... it's really great to listen to on vinyl
-----------------------------------------------
Wednesday, January 7, 2009
"White Rain," Ghostfinger

i found this one on http://daytrotter.com/, a great place to find up and coming but still kind of under the radar musicians (that's totally paradoxical, but you know what i mean). basically what they do, is they'll have a band/artist come in and record around 3–5 songs, and then make the songs available for download on their website. it's really great.
------------------------------------------------
Thursday, January 8, 2009
"In The Flowers," Animal Collective

while straying a bit from their usual style, animal collective's new album, Merriweather Post Pavillion , like all of their work, is really remarkable. they always manage to produce such strange yet beautiful music. i'm very impressed.
-------------------------------------------------
Friday, January 9, 2009
"What Would You Do?" City High

taking it back... this is probably one of the saddest songs i have ever heard.
--------------------------------------------------
Saturday, January 10, 2009
"In The Privacy of Our Love," Hot Chip

i love how he says "prIvacy" (as in "sIck") rather than "prEYEvacy"...
what a lovely accent.
--------------------------------------------------
Sunday, January 11, 2009
"Dear Sons and Daughters of Hungry Ghosts," Wolf Parade

having listened more to sunset rubdown before wolf parade, its kind of weird to hear spencer krug's very distinctive voice in another band's songs. but sunset rubdown and wolf parade are most definitely equally as good (though quite different). this wolf parade album in particular is very good ("apologies to the queen mary").
--------------------------------------------------
Monday, January 12, 2009
"Summer Breeze," CocoRosie

such a sad twist on an otherwise quite derogatory/degrading song...
--------------------------------------------------
Tuesday, January 13, 2009
"Your Ex-Lover Is Dead (Final Fantasy)," Stars

i know 'your ex-lover is dead' has already been a 'song of the day' but i came across this version awhile ago and recently fell in love with it. i really recommend checking out this one too.
---------------------------------------------------
Wednesday, January 14, 2009
"When We're Apart," The Morning Benders

a very cute-sy mix of indie pop/rock.
nice lyrics.
not necessarily in this song, but in many others chris chu's vocals sound a lot like James Mercer's (of The Shins). the feel of the morning benders still manages to be very unique, however-- a definite plus.
----------------------------------------------------
Thursday, January 15, 2009
"Just Like A Woman," Bob Dylan

this has always been one of my favorite bob dylan songs. when i recently discovered that it may be about slash inspired by edie sedgwick (new york socialite aka andy warhol's muse) i fell in love with it even more, because despite her many bad decision in life, she has always been one of my favorite people of the past/idols...
-----------------------------------------------------
Friday, January 16, 2009
"Black And Milds," Cataldo

gotta give credit to joey for this one. or rather, to joey's sister's friend. yeah, that.
um anyway, basically a mellowed down I'm From Barcelona-- with plenty of hand claps, large chorus-type singing, and peppy piano to go around. i'm a fan.
------------------------------------------------------
Saturday, January 17, 2009
"I've Just Got To Tell You," Dr. Dog

a lot of people call them beatles-esque. not quite sure i agree, but either way they are a very nice, mellow band. great background music. "fate" is a wonderful album. this song is my favorite of all of theirs.
-------------------------------------------------------
Sunday, January 18, 2009
"Napoleon On the Bellerophon," Beirut

this song is on the "pompeii" single zach condon released very early on in his career before he had really established beirut and its sound. this two-song release is thus quite different from any of beirut's other work. a bit more electronic-y and lo-fi sounding, you could say.
--------------------------------------------------------
Monday, January 19, 2009
"My Thin Sides," Army Navy

" impeccably crafted melody over blankets of guitar fuzz that creates a delicate balance between melancholy and joyful resignation. "

Wednesday, February 4, 2009

Tuesday, February 3, 2009

that previous post...

yeah didnt't work. i'll try again when i have more time.

Back to the Beginning...

so i started this back in November 2008. the basic story behind it is that i would frequently post songs i liked as my statuses on facebook, and after i stopped this for awhile a friend commented on how they really missed my "song of the day." flattered that anyone had actually noticed, i was also very inspired to create an actual "song of the day" note.

it's been going for a few months now (with a few breaks...) and i have gotten mostly positive feedback. even if i hadn't, i wouldn't really care... i really just want to share some amazing bands with the world.

so, long story short, i like sharing my interest in music and have thus created all this just for you--the reader--enjoy!!

peace and love. emi
